Hong Kong is an urban explorer’s fantasy. In addition to the car spotting (do this in Central, at the bottom of Garden Road looking up towards the Mid-Levels. Your jaw will DROP), the public transportation networks are impressive to any visitor.
The buses are so frequent that some lines will see doubling-up during rush hours. The railways are spotless, with rush hour headways being nearly zero and glass safety gates retrofitted to nearly all stations.
Then there’s the infamous urban grit, which is yet another world of exploration and photography.
Then there’s the mountains—60% of the land is uninhabited. The hiking is another world.
First time, get your planning game on. You are likely limited on time, so make your priorities before arriving.

Thanks. I finish my semester in a couple days, so we’ll have a bit over a week to plan stuff out.
Would you happen to know anything about Taipei as well?

Taipei, while generally an easy place to explore by any standard, is not as immediately tourist-accessible as HK—after all, few places are. The main draw for me is the Taiwanese food. The railway networks are not as intuitive, but some studying should get you to your destinations without too much trouble.
Taiwan has more historically important stuff, so make some time for that. The Chinese, Aboriginal, Japanese and Portuguese/Dutch (in that order) cultures all have historical significance in Taiwan dating to the 1600s and even earlier. Its heritage is much deeper than HK, which wasn’t even a “place” until the late-1800s, much less a major city.
I used to be a sort of go-to guy for visiting HK; although I no longer have the time to compile suggestions for friends, feel free to ask me any specific questions about either city.

Back to cars: There is a weekly “Sunday Morning Drive” gathering. I don’t recall exactly where in HK, but search it online. The variety of cars is mindblowing.

Thanks! Never knew about its heritage. We’re definitely heading to those night markets.

I can’t find any recent info on it, but thanks anyway! It looks amazing.
